If you're a huge Game of Thrones fan, you've no doubt spent the last six years obsessed with everything to do with the show and its cast members. And you'll most likely be counting down the days, minutes, and seconds until Season 7 finally arrives on our screens late next week.
Well, we were lucky enough to sit down with a load of the stars ahead of the new episodes. And we decided to use the opportunity to find out everything we wanted to know about what goes on behind the scenes. From learning how everyone likes to take the piss out of Kit Harington to talking about pranks on set, as well as a near-spoiler occurring, the GoT cast revealed everything you've ever wanted to know about them…
Who is most likely to be caught singing on set?
Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark): Me. Or Maisie [Williams, who plays Arya Stark]. Both of us together. Always. It's constant. [smirks]
Who is the biggest jokester?
Rory McCann (The Hound): I'm quite a joker. [smirks]
John Bradley (Samwell Tarley): This guy. [points at Rory]
RM: Yeah, I'm pretty bad actually. I do all sorts of things. You know, fishing line attached to swords, things like that… Shaving foam in the shoes.
JB: I think Conleth Hill [who plays Varys] – Conleth Hill's quite a joker as well. He's got a way of putting people at ease through all of that stuff. I don't work with Conleth personally, but I know that people that have worked with him say it's a nice, relaxed environment to be in, to work in.
RM: Yeah, I'd love to do something with him.
Who is most likely to be found eating all day?
Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm): I eat quite a lot actually.
Daniel Portman (Podrick): Yeah. I like to eat.
JA: I'm like a little mouse about it. I'll go to the table – we've got really healthy craft services, it's really nice but it's, like, rice cakes and stuff – and I go past the rice cakes and just get the biscuits. I'll hide biscuits in my costume.
Who is most likely to show you pictures of their cat or dog?
Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger): I think I've shown quite a few pictures of my dog to people. But you know, kind of after work.
Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark): Well we have actual dogs in the makeup trailer. Kevin brings…
AG: Yeah, Kevin's got a dog and sometimes he has a couple of dogs in there.
IHW: There's a couple of dogs just sort of roaming about set every now and then, and you go 'oh, whose dog is that?' We've got the real thing.
AG: I tell stories about my dog. [grins]
Who is most likely to turn up hungover?
ST: Ooh. Most of us! [laughs] No, I think we're all pretty professional. I think we've all turned up hungover once or twice in our lives to set. Most likely [thinks and laughs] I don't want to throw anyone under the bus… I'll just say myself. But it's not true, I just don't want to expose all the drunkards on set.
Who is the best at doing impressions of the other cast members?
Gemma Whelan (Yara Greyjoy): [puts on Jon Snow voice] Everyone likes to do a Jon Snow. Really badly, like this.
Pilou Asbæk (Euron Greyjoy): [puts on deep Jon voice] Winter's coming.
GW: [still in Jon voice] I'm cold. [reverts to normal voice] Yeah, Jon Snow's quite fun! [bursts out laughing]
Who's the best dancer?
ST: Maisie. Or Kit [Harington, who plays Jon Snow]! Kit does this little like [starts dancing in her chair, moving her shoulders] what's his name? Bob Dylan vibes. [laughs] I don't know. It's kind of amazing though. It's really funny to watch. His little short stature, it's so cute.
Who is most likely to be on their phone texting?
AG: The honest answer to that is I ain't seen that many people on their phones…which is a good thing. Because that's something that's become so prevalent on sets nowadays that it's annoying. I've seen a few crew members on their phones that annoyed me… I don't know. It's not me.
IHW: I'm just going to blame Kristian Nairn [who plays Hodor] because he's a good friend of mine [smiles]. I think, to be fair, me and him are always on our phones. I always try and get him to play an app with me.
AG: Shit, OK, I've actually done it a couple of times too! [both laugh]
Who is the most likely to accidentally show up late to set?
ST: Ooh. Alfie [Allen, who plays Theon Greyjoy]. [laughs]
Who takes the longest to get ready?
Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth): [looks at Carice] You take a long time.
Carice van Houten (Melisandre): It depends who does my hair. Well if you're a woman… well, it depends because if you've got scars and things… I mean, as the old lady I had to sit in makeup for six hours. That was pretty long. It's the wig… just for women it's, you know, longer.
LC: I know I take the shortest.
CV: There's not so much you can do any more. [smiles cheekily]
Liam: No, there's nothing. I had to beg for a head transplant. They haven't got the budget. I literally walk in… I have a shower, obviously, before I come to work and I literally sit down in the chair, like that. And I get a sponge with some dirt on it and I do that [mimics patting his face], and then I'm shoved out the door.
CV: Life's great when you're a man [jokingly rolls eyes].
Who is the most likely to brighten everyone's day?
PA: Oh, I was just about to do a spoiler! [covers his mouth and laughs] I was so close to saying her name!
GW: [realises who he means and laughs] You could have met them in a hotel. You can't say it now, obviously.
PA: No. Well, the ones I've been working with is Gemma and Alfie and I'm not going to pick one in front of the other.
GW: I would choose Kristof [Hivju, who plays Tormund]. He always makes me laugh. I met him at a dinner party with some of the other cast. I'd never met him before and he was very joyful and different and exciting. Yeah, he's fun. It's hard to choose… Emilia [Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen], she's sunshine.
PA: I met Peter [Dinklage, who plays Tyrion Lannister]. I kid you not, he did a show for, like, three hours just entertaining me and I laughed and laughed and laughed and laughed. Very, very funny.
Who is most likely to nail every single take?
RM: I remember in the past Maisie always got it right. I always got it wrong. She was the clever clogs. She kept me right.
Who is most likely to hang out off set?
IHW: I think all of us are.
AG: It depends. I haven't done loads of socialising. If you're on location, everyone will go out for dinner. I've gone out for a few games of pool in Belfast. That's always very entertaining, because groups of Game of Thrones actors together, you get a bit of buzz going on and if you're playing a game of pool in a pub or pool hall in town – I mean the crowd are quite sociable and after a long day's working you want to go out and have fun, but you're always up at, like, 5 the next morning so…
IHW: I met my best friend on Game of Thrones – Dean Charles Chapman, who played Tommen. I talk to him every day. So we always see each other.
Who is most likely to fall for a prank?
JB: I wouldn't have thought it was me…until I fell for a prank. I was so full of contempt for people who fell for pranks. I thought, How on earth did you not see that coming? How have you fallen for this? It was so telegraphed and so signposted. And then I fell for a prank – hook, line, and sinker – and I ate my words a little bit.
Who is most likely to photobomb a picture?
GW: Alfie, yeah. I was a beat behind you. Alfie. Definitely.
Who would most likely get the Iron Throne in real life?
RM: The biggest and the strongest.
[John points to Rory]
RM: That will be Hafþór [Júlíus Björnsson, who plays The Mountain].
JB: Oh right, of course. Yeah.
Who's most likely to initiate a post-work hangout?
CV: Alfie, I would say.
LC: Yeah, Alfie likes a bit of a laugh… When we're all working together we – I think people found it quite strange – when we were working together, when Stephen [Dillane, who plays Stannis], Carice, and myself were working together, I think people in Belfast found it quite strange when they were walking past a restaurant with big windows and to see Melisandre, Davos, and Stannis having dinner in a restaurant.
CV: And smiling!
LC: Yeah, and smiling and having a laugh… But we had dinner most nights, didn't we? Which was fun. Really good fun.
Who is most likely to be found napping between scenes?
GW: Ooh, I haven't caught anyone yet.
GW: Oh, you then.
PA: I'm a father to a little daughter, so I like to take a nap.
GW: He likes to come to us to rest. Even if it's a night shoot.
Who is most likely to be caught taking a selfie?
DP: I don't know who's most active on Instagram. I'd say Sophie or Maisie because they're the only people I know are active on Instagram.
JA: Oh, you mean actors? I was thinking characters! I was thinking Cersei. I feel like she's a pouter.
DP: [laughs] Jaime! Just getting the hand in. [mimes taking a selfie with Jaime's metal hand]. I don't know. I don't know why I said that, to be honest.
JA: Sophie and Maisie are young… And I don't mean that in a condescending way. They're very active on social media. I sound so old saying that! “Very active on social media.”
Who takes filming the most seriously?
LC: Me. [looks at Carice, who laughs and signals her disagreement] We all do. It's the quietest set I've ever worked on. Everybody's doing their thing.
CV: Everyone does it in their own way. I mean, we joke a lot on set but it doesn't mean that we don't take our job very seriously… Some people are more closed off or some people are more…just like him [points at Liam]. You know, he won't shut up.
LC: I won't shut up. How dare you! [laughs]
CV: But I think that's also the power of it. Everyone works so hard and [is] so concentrated. Once you have to do it, you have to do it. It's not… no mucking around.
LC: No, if you look at the outtakes and the bloopers there's very little.
CV: I mean, I give them some sometimes. [smiles]
What's the one thing fans would be surprised to know about the show and cast?
ST: I mean, I think everyone is always really surprised when we're all just kind of young and fun and we all hang out and go to bars and play pool, and everyone thinks it's the weirdest thing when they see us together. Because they go “Shouldn't you be in a castle somewhere drawing up battle plans?” What's most surprising? [thinks some more] Everybody takes the piss out of Kit [Harington]. [grins] It's really fun, though. He loves it!
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres in the US on Sunday, 16 July. It will air in the UK on 17 July on Sky Atlantic and Now TV at 2am GMT, repeated at 9pm GMT on the same day.
